Folded in a wingback chair, Amelia tried to read. But her thoughts kept circling back on themselves, until—as if she’d summoned him—she heard Mr. Sisson’s knock on the door. By now, she couldn’t mistake it for someone else’s.

She waited until he knocked again, then went, opened the door only wide enough to form a wedge. His voice failed him, but she saw Banquo wasn’t there. To forestall any awkward invitation, she said, “I’m staying in today.”

“Of course. But—may I speak with you? Please.”

Amelia kept her eyes on the threshold between them and said, “Not here.”

Softly, she shut the door. Dawdled long enough with her boots and things that she wondered if he might be gone when she opened it again—but thought even if she waited until morning, he would still be there.
